2016 Excellence in Sustainability Award Winner: City of Plano, Environmental Health & Sustainability Department2016 Excellence in Sustainability Winner

The All in Together: Water Smart Plano campaign is an innovative, holistic approach to reducing water use through education and outreach. Summer water use in Plano is 2.5 times higher than winter use due to outdoor water, and about 50% of this outdoor water use is wasted. Prolonged drought conditions and subsequent water restrictions require water providers to focus on reducing outdoor water waste. Single-family residential homes account for over 65% of the city's water usage. On April 1, 2014, Plano implemented heightened stage 3 water restrictions that allowed outdoor watering only once every 14 days throughout the summer months. The need for education and outreach to support these unprecedented water restrictions was recognized and the All in Together: Water Smart Plano campaign was launched on June 4, 2014. The purpose fo the outreach campaign was to inform residents and businesses of drought restrictions and provide education on water conservation strategies that promote behavior change and foster a culture of water conservation beyond water restrictions. The campaign yielded 4.3 billion gallons of water savings during a time when the region's water supply was under critical strain.
